How to Use AI for Renewables

If you develop, operate, finance or invest in renewable energy assets, the analytical layer of your business is built on top of three structural realities that distinguish renewables from every other asset class. First, the revenue is uncertain in ways that are governed by physics - wind speeds, irradiance, water availability - which makes the underlying production a probabilistic problem rather than a deterministic one. Second, the contractual layer that converts physical production into cash flow is unusually complex - PPAs, CfDs, RECs, capacity payments, ancillary services, balancing market exposure, curtailment compensation, basis risk between generation and pricing nodes - and it varies by jurisdiction, by technology, and by vintage. Third, the assets are typically held inside fund structures - infrastructure funds, yieldcos, IPP balance sheets, dedicated renewables platforms - where the reporting cadence to LPs, lenders and the parent is intense and unforgiving.

The combination of these three realities produces an analytical workload that is heavier per dollar of asset value than most other infrastructure. Energy yield assessments, P50/P90 forecasts, wake modelling, soiling and degradation analysis, curtailment scenarios, PPA pricing analysis, basis risk, debt sculpting, equity returns under multiple scenarios, portfolio-level concentration analysis, ESG reporting, regulatory compliance - all done across portfolios that have grown from a handful of assets a decade ago to multi-gigawatt platforms today.

The industry has scaled faster than its analytical infrastructure. The sophistication of the analysis being asked of renewables teams has grown faster than the productivity of the people doing the analysis. AI is now landing on this gap, and the magnitude of what changes is larger in renewables than in most adjacent industries. This article walks through, in detail, what that looks like across the workflows that renewables teams actually run.


The structural problem in renewables

A multi-GW renewables platform with a mix of operational, under-construction and development-stage assets typically has, at any given moment:

  • Real-time SCADA data from every operating asset. Per-turbine, per-inverter, per-string. 10-minute averages, 1-minute averages, sometimes second-level data. Wind speed, wind direction, power output, availability, fault codes, met mast data, transformer temperatures, grid frequency, voltage. Sitting in OEM platforms (Vestas Online, GE WindCONTROL, Siemens Gamesa Wind Power Service), in third-party SCADA aggregators (Greenbyte, Power Factors, AlsoEnergy), and in the asset owner's own data lake. Often duplicated, never reconciled.
  • Energy yield assessments produced by independent consultants - DNV, UL, Wood Mackenzie, K2 Management, Pondera. P50, P90, P99 by month, by year, over the asset life. Built using mesoscale wind models, on-site met mast data, wake models (Park, Eddy Viscosity, Larsen, FLORIS), losses (electrical, availability, environmental, curtailment), and uncertainty stacks. The numbers in the assessment are the basis for the financing case. They almost never get systematically compared back to actual production once the asset is operating.
  • Operational performance reports - typically monthly, produced by the O&M provider or the asset manager. Availability, capacity factor, energy production, downtime by category, top-five events. These reports are PDFs. The underlying data is in the SCADA system. The two are not connected in any reliable way.
  • Project finance models in Excel. Built by the development team for FID, refined by the financial advisor for the debt raise, handed over to the asset manager for ongoing reporting. Multiple versions, hard-coded numbers, conditional formatting that breaks when any structural change is needed. Each model contains the asset's PPA terms, the merchant tail assumption, the OPEX schedule, the major maintenance reserve, the senior debt sculpting, the tax equity structure if US, and the equity returns under base, low and high cases.
  • PPA contracts in PDFs. Tens of pages. Pricing structures that include fixed prices, indexed prices, volume bands, curtailment compensation, force majeure clauses, change-in-law protections, performance LDs. The actual settlement against the PPA each month requires reading the contract, applying it to the metered production data, and reconciling the invoice. This is done manually at most platforms.
  • Hedge contracts and fixed-price arrangements - virtual PPAs, contracts for difference, financial hedges with hedge providers - with their own settlement mechanics, their own basis exposures, their own credit considerations.
  • Curtailment data, which sometimes lives in SCADA and sometimes lives in a separate ISO/TSO portal (CAISO OASIS, ERCOT, AEMO NEMweb, ENTSO-E, National Grid ESO). Curtailment compensation rules vary by region. Recovering compensation requires manual claim filing in many jurisdictions.
  • Wholesale market data - day-ahead prices, real-time prices, ancillary services prices, capacity prices - from each market the platform operates in, in different formats, with different settlement structures.
  • Development pipeline tracking - projects in different stages from greenfield site identification through FID - typically in some combination of a project management tool (Asana, Monday, or a custom database), Excel files, and SharePoint folders. Permits, grid connection studies, land options, EPC tender progress, financing status, all tracked separately.
  • ESG and sustainability data - emissions avoided, biodiversity impact, community engagement, supply chain due diligence on modules and turbines, recyclability commitments. In a separate system. With its own reporting cadence to LPs and to regulators.
  • Regulatory and policy data - feed-in tariffs, contract-for-difference allocations, REC markets, EU taxonomy alignment, IRA tax credit eligibility (PTC, ITC, transferability, prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements), state renewable portfolio standards. A material change in any of these can move the value of an asset or a pipeline by tens of millions of dollars.

Now ask a question that crosses these systems. "Our Iberian solar portfolio is producing below the P50 forecast year-to-date. How much of the gap is irradiance, how much is soiling, how much is availability, how much is curtailment, and what is the implied impact on the equity returns to our LPs and on debt service coverage at the next test date?" That is a question with an answer in the data. Producing the answer with current workflows requires the technical asset manager to pull the production data, the engineering team to assess the technical performance, the commercial team to look at the market and curtailment exposure, and the finance team to flow it through the model. Two weeks, minimum. By then, somebody has already asked the next question.

This is why renewables is a particularly high-leverage sector for the analytical layer that AI is now bringing. The data is dense, the workflows are recurring, the cross-domain integration is heavy, and the cost of getting it wrong - in financing terms, in LP relations, in regulatory compliance - is large.


The renewables workflows AI changes most

There are roughly fourteen analytical workflows that consume the bulk of renewables analytical time. Below I work through each in detail.


1. Energy yield assessment validation and reconciliation

Current state: when an asset is being financed, an independent consultant produces an energy yield assessment that becomes the basis for the lender's case and the equity model. The assessment includes a P50 expected production, a P90 one-year and ten-year, and an uncertainty stack. After financial close, the assessment goes into a drawer.

Six months into operations, somebody asks why the asset is producing below P50. The answer requires comparing realised performance against the assumptions in the original assessment, identifying which of the assumptions was wrong, and updating the view going forward. This is a substantial workstream that typically gets done badly or not at all, because the cost of doing it well is high and the immediate benefit is unclear - until refinancing or sale, when the gap between forecast and realised performance becomes the central question in the negotiation.

What AI does: it reads the energy yield assessment, extracts the assumption stack (long-term wind resource or irradiance, wake losses, electrical losses, availability assumptions, soiling assumptions, environmental losses, uncertainty), maintains a continuous reconciliation against actual performance, and attributes the variance. The Iberian portfolio that is below P50 by 4% - was it 1.5% irradiance variance, 1% lower availability than forecast, 0.5% higher soiling, 1% higher curtailment? Each component is calculated continuously from the underlying data and compared to the assessment baseline.

What the technical asset manager still does: judges whether the variances are structural or stochastic, decides whether the assessment needs to be rerun, decides whether the operating assumptions in the financial model need to be updated. The judgement remains with the engineer. The data assembly that currently consumes their week is gone.

The compression here is roughly 10:1 on the reconciliation work, and the quality is substantially higher because the comparison is done continuously rather than as a discrete project.


2. Operational performance analytics

Current state: the asset manager wants to know whether each asset, each turbine, each inverter, each string is performing as it should. The SCADA system surfaces faults. The OEM service team handles them. The monthly availability report says what the availability was. Capacity factor is calculated and reported.

What is much harder, and what does not happen at most platforms, is the analytical layer that distinguishes between problems that are random - a turbine going down because of a once-in-five-years gearbox event - and problems that are structural - a turbine that has been quietly under-performing for three months because of a yaw misalignment, or a row of solar trackers whose performance has been drifting because of a controller fault that does not trigger an alarm.

The reason this is hard is that detecting structural under-performance requires comparing each asset against its expected performance under the conditions it actually experienced - turbines at the front of a wake against turbines in the wake, panels under measured irradiance and temperature against modelled output. Doing that comparison properly, continuously, across a portfolio, requires the kind of integrated data layer that most platforms do not have.

What AI does: maintains the per-asset expected production model continuously, compares against actual, attributes variance, and surfaces the cases that are not random. A turbine whose power curve has shifted is detected long before the OEM warranty trigger. A string whose performance has dropped relative to its peers gets flagged before the asset manager would notice it in monthly reporting. A field whose soiling pattern is consistent with a specific atmospheric event is identified, and the projected energy loss until the next cleaning is quantified.

The asset manager moves from "looking for problems" to "managing the problems the platform has surfaced." Over a portfolio of any reasonable size, the energy recovery from this shift is measured in basis points of capacity factor, which translates into millions of dollars of revenue.


3. PPA settlement and revenue assurance

Current state: each month, the commercial team has to settle the asset's revenue against its PPA. This involves pulling the metered production for each settlement interval, applying the PPA pricing structure (which can include fixed prices, indexed prices, hourly profiles, volume bands, curtailment compensation, performance adjustments), reconciling the result against the offtaker's invoice, and chasing discrepancies.

For a single asset with a simple PPA, this is manageable. For a platform with twenty assets across five jurisdictions with different PPA structures, it consumes substantial commercial team time. Discrepancies of 2-3% of revenue against expectations are common, and most platforms recover only a fraction of what they are owed because the analytical work to identify and pursue claims is too expensive relative to the recovery.

What AI does: reads each PPA, extracts the pricing and settlement mechanics into a structured form, applies them to the actual metered production, produces the expected invoice, reconciles against the actual invoice, and flags discrepancies with the underlying causes. A curtailment event that should have triggered compensation under the PPA but did not appear on the invoice is surfaced. A pricing index that was applied to the wrong settlement period is caught. A performance adjustment that was calculated against the wrong reference is identified.

The commercial team moves from "reconciling invoices" to "pursuing identified claims." Recoveries on a 1 GW portfolio routinely run into seven figures annually. The platform pays for itself on this workflow alone at any meaningful scale.


4. Curtailment management and compensation

Current state: in markets with high renewable penetration - California, Texas, Spain, Germany, Australia, Chile - curtailment is a material drag on revenue. The mechanics differ. In some markets curtailment is compensated; in others it is not. In some markets the recovery requires active claim filing; in others it is automatic. Tracking actual curtailed energy, distinguishing economic curtailment from system-driven curtailment, identifying which claims to pursue, and managing the documentation is a workflow that most platforms do badly because it crosses SCADA, market data, contractual analysis and regulatory filing.

What AI does: maintains continuous awareness of curtailment events, distinguishes economic from system curtailment using market price data, applies the relevant compensation rules from the PPA and the market, calculates the recoverable compensation, generates the documentation needed for the claim, and tracks the claim through to settlement.

For platforms in high-curtailment markets, this is direct revenue uplift, often substantial. For platforms in markets where curtailment compensation is automatic but mis-applied, this is the same dynamic in a different form.


5. Asset valuation and portfolio NAV

Current state: every renewables fund and IPP has to maintain a valuation view of every asset. For a fund, it is for LP reporting on a quarterly cadence. For an IPP, it is for management reporting and for sale and refinancing decisions. For a yieldco, it is the basis of the public market story.

The valuation is built from the asset-level financial model, updated for the latest production, the latest market view, and the latest financing structure. In practice, the update cycle is heavy enough that valuations are refreshed on the cadence of formal reporting events rather than continuously. A fund that closed a transaction in March may not have a refreshed view of the asset's value until the September NAV cycle, even if the inputs to the valuation have moved materially in the interim.

What AI does: maintains the valuation continuously. Each asset's financial model is linked to the underlying production, the market view, the contractual position, and the financing structure. When merchant tail price expectations move, the valuation moves. When operational performance improves or deteriorates, the valuation moves. When a refinancing changes the debt structure, the valuation moves. The fund team always has a current view, not a quarterly snapshot.

For the LP reporting cadence, this means the September NAV starts from a current baseline rather than from a workstream that takes the analytical team a month to produce. For sale and refinancing decisions, it means the platform is always in a position to evaluate inbound interest with a current view of value.


6. Acquisition due diligence

Current state: a renewables M&A data room is structurally similar to an upstream data room - hundreds to thousands of documents, technical assessments, contracts, financial models, regulatory filings, environmental studies. The technical content is different. The workload is the same.

For an operating asset, the deal team needs to validate the energy yield assessment, assess the operational performance, review the PPA and other contracts, evaluate the regulatory risk, and build a view of the financial returns under their own assumptions. For a development-stage asset, the work is different - permitting status, grid connection certainty, land control, EPC tender position, financing path - but the structure is the same.

For a fund running an active deal pipeline, the analytical capacity to seriously evaluate every opportunity is the binding constraint. Funds look at many deals and bid seriously on a few. The selection of which to bid on is itself based on incomplete information.

What AI does: reads the data room. For an operating asset, the platform produces a structured view of the asset - capacity, technology, vintage, operational performance versus assessment, PPA economics, debt structure, contractual obligations, identified risks, valuation under house assumptions. For a development-stage asset, the platform produces the equivalent - permits status with critical path, grid connection sensitivity, land control completeness, EPC tender competitiveness, financing risk.

The deal team starts the actual investment work from a synthesised baseline. Three opportunities can be evaluated in the time one currently takes. In a fund context, this is a structural advantage that compounds over deal cycles.


7. Project finance modelling and debt sizing

Current state: the project finance model is the central analytical artefact for any new build. It contains the production forecast, the revenue stack, the operating cost structure, the major maintenance reserve, the senior debt with sculpting, the tax equity if US, the construction phase mechanics, the equity returns. Building it takes a financial advisor weeks. Modifying it for sensitivity analysis takes hours per scenario. Updating it for actual performance once the asset is operational requires a dedicated workstream.

What AI does: it does not replace the financial advisor's judgement on structuring. What it does is make the model itself more responsive. The model is constructed against the underlying data - the production forecast comes from the energy yield assessment, the operating costs come from the contractual structure, the financing terms come from the term sheet - and updates when the inputs change. Sensitivity analysis runs in seconds rather than hours. Stress scenarios - low merchant prices, high curtailment, high inflation on opex, delayed COD - can be run as a matter of course rather than as a discrete exercise.

For the developer running a financing process, this means more responsive negotiation with lenders. For the asset manager taking over post-COD, it means the model is in a state to be useful for ongoing operations rather than something that needs to be rebuilt for the asset management role.


8. Portfolio capital allocation

Current state: a multi-asset platform with an active development pipeline has to allocate capital. Which projects to push to FID, which to pause, which to divest. Which existing assets to invest in for performance improvement. Which markets to expand into. These decisions get made in some combination of management judgement and ad hoc analysis. The ad hoc analysis is heavy because the underlying data - current valuations, marginal returns on incremental capex, risk concentration, currency exposure, regulatory exposure - is not easily assembled.

What AI does: maintains the inputs to the capital allocation decision continuously. Each asset has a current valuation. Each development project has a current expected NPV at FID with sensitivity to the binding constraints. Each market has a current view of regulatory and pricing risk. The CFO can ask, on any given Tuesday, "given our remaining capital budget for the year and the projects in the pipeline, what is the allocation that maximises expected returns subject to our concentration constraints," and have an answer.

For platforms that are active in M&A and in development simultaneously, this is the difference between deploying capital well and deploying it adequately.


9. Regulatory and policy exposure analysis

Current state: every renewables asset is exposed to the regulatory and policy regime under which it was financed. A change in policy - the IRA in the US, CfD allocation rounds in the UK, the renewable obligation buy-out price, the Spanish electricity tariff structure, the Australian Capacity Investment Scheme, the German EEG framework - can move asset values materially. Tracking the exposure across a portfolio, anticipating policy changes, and modelling the implications is a workload that scales linearly with the size of the portfolio and the number of jurisdictions.

What AI does: maintains the linkage between the regulatory framework and each asset's economics. When a policy change is announced or anticipated, the platform identifies which assets are exposed, quantifies the impact, and surfaces the implications for the financing structure (debt covenants, equity returns, tax structure) and for the portfolio strategy.

For a platform with exposure across multiple jurisdictions - which describes most large infrastructure funds - this is a permanent workstream that becomes substantially more tractable.


10. Lender and LP reporting

Current state: every financed renewables asset has lender reporting obligations. Every fund has LP reporting obligations. The reports are formatted, detailed, and produced on a fixed cadence. The underlying data has to come from the asset, the operations, the markets, the financing, and the corporate structure. Producing the reports takes substantial team time, most of which is data assembly rather than analysis.

What AI does: produces the reports from the underlying data layer. The lender's coverage ratio test at the next test date is calculated from current production and current pricing rather than from a snapshot. The LP report is generated from the same data the GP team uses for management. The variance against budget, against forecast, against prior period is decomposed automatically. The team's time goes into the narrative rather than the assembly.


11. Development pipeline management

Current state: a developer with an active pipeline of projects in various stages has to track each project through to FID. Permits, grid connection studies, land options, EPC tenders, environmental assessments, community engagement, regulatory filings, financing status. Each project has a critical path. Each critical path has dependencies that can move.

The tracking is typically done in some combination of a project management tool, a spreadsheet, and the project lead's head. When something slips, the implications for the FID date, the financing window, and the project economics get assessed manually if at all.

What AI does: maintains the integrated view of each project's critical path, the dependencies, the slippage risk, and the financial implications. When a permit slips, the platform identifies which financing window is affected, what the IRR impact is at the current cost structure, and whether the slippage is large enough to warrant a strategic review of the project.


12. ESG and impact reporting

Current state: renewables platforms have unusually heavy ESG reporting requirements because their LPs and regulators expect it. EU taxonomy alignment, SFDR Article 8/9 reporting, GRESB benchmarking, IFRS S2 climate disclosures, GHG emissions avoided, biodiversity impact, supply chain due diligence on modules and turbines. The reporting is heavy. The underlying calculations are formulaic but the data assembly is not.

What AI does: maintains the ESG data alongside the operational data. Emissions avoided is calculated from actual generation and grid carbon intensity by hour. Taxonomy alignment is maintained automatically. Supply chain due diligence is tracked continuously. Reports get produced from the data layer rather than from a separate workstream.


13. Hybrid asset and storage co-optimisation

Current state: hybrid assets - solar plus storage, wind plus storage - are increasingly common. The operational decision is no longer "produce when there is sun" or "produce when there is wind." It is "given the current state of charge, the current and forecast prices, the current and forecast resource availability, and the contractual constraints, what is the optimal dispatch over the next 24 hours."

This is a real-time optimisation problem that depends on accurate forecasts, accurate market signals, and accurate constraint modelling. Most operators run the optimisation in the OEM controller or a third-party software. The post-hoc analysis of whether the optimisation was good - was the dispatch we ran the optimal one given what actually happened in the market - is rarely done.

What AI does: maintains the post-hoc assessment of dispatch performance. For each hour of operation, the platform compares the actual dispatch to the dispatch that would have been optimal given the realised market and resource conditions. The gap is decomposed into forecast error, controller error, and constraint error. The dispatch strategy can be tuned based on the analysis.

For storage assets in particular, where the value of the asset depends heavily on the quality of the dispatch optimisation, this is direct economic value.


14. Refinancing and exit positioning

Current state: every renewables asset eventually gets refinanced or sold. For an infrastructure fund, the exit is the realisation event that defines fund returns. For an IPP, refinancings are recurring liquidity events. The work involved in positioning an asset for refinancing or sale is heavy - assembling the data room, running the financial analysis, preparing the marketing materials, supporting the buyer's diligence.

What AI does: maintains the asset in a state where it is always ready for refinancing or sale. The data room is constructed continuously rather than as a discrete project. The valuation analysis is current. The buyer's likely questions can be answered from the existing data layer. The work that currently consumes a substantial team for two months ahead of a sale gets compressed into the marketing and negotiation work that actually requires human judgement.


What the operating model looks like once this is in place

Renewables is the sector where the magnitude of the operational shift is largest, because the underlying data is dense, the analytical workflows are recurring at high frequency, and the contractual and financial layers are unusually heavy. Once the data layer is connected and the analytical layer above it is functional, the operating tempo of the platform changes substantially.

The asset management function shifts from reactive to predictive. Performance issues get identified at the asset level on the cadence of the data, not on the cadence of monthly reporting. Energy recovery from operational improvement is meaningfully larger than it currently is at most platforms.

The commercial function shifts from reconciling to pursuing. Revenue assurance becomes a continuous workflow rather than a periodic project. Curtailment recovery, PPA settlement claims, basis exposure management - all become workflows that run continuously and produce direct revenue uplift.

The investment function shifts from constrained to opportunistic. The deal team can evaluate three times the volume of opportunities at the same depth. The capital allocation decision happens with current information rather than with the snapshot from the last NAV cycle. The portfolio optimisation is something the CFO actually runs rather than something the analytical capacity says they should run.

The reporting function shifts from assembly to narrative. Lender reports, LP reports, board reports, ESG reports - all produced from the data layer rather than from a parallel workstream that takes the team away from value-creating work.

The technical and engineering disciplines stay human. Energy yield assessments still require qualified consultants. Project finance structuring still requires experienced advisors. Regulatory analysis still requires specialist counsel. Investment decisions still require experienced principals. None of that goes away. What changes is that the time spent on data assembly drops to near zero, and the time available for the actual technical and judgement work increases proportionately.


Where the platform layer fits

What I have described is a connected data layer covering production, contracts, financial structure, market data, regulatory environment and ESG inputs; a set of modular analytical engines for the workflows above; and an interface that lets the team get answers to cross-domain questions without going through a five-person workstream first. Where to start

If you develop, operate, finance or invest in renewables, the first thing to do is not to commission a digital strategy review. It is to take a single workflow you currently run more slowly than you should, and run it through the platform.

  • A development pipeline status and risk view across your active projects. Run the platform against the underlying project data and see what it surfaces about critical path slippage and FID risk.
